About SHTF Prep

Practical preparedness for ordinary households, without the fear.

SHTF Prep helps families get ready for the emergencies they are actually likely to face: hurricanes, long power outages, boil-water notices and evacuations. The aim is a calm, realistic plan that a busy household can finish, not a bunker.

How the guides are written

Every safety figure on this site, such as how much water to store, how long food stays safe without power, or how far a generator must be from your house, comes from official public-health and emergency-management sources, mainly the CDC, FEMA's Ready.gov, NOAA and USDA. Each guide links the sources it relies on at the bottom of the page so you can check them yourself.

We review guides before each hurricane season and whenever official guidance changes. If you spot something out of date, please tell us.

What we don't do

  • We don't replace instructions from your local emergency officials. If they tell you to evacuate, go.
  • We don't give medical advice. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about medications and medical equipment.
  • We don't claim to have tested products unless a page says so plainly.
