Privacy policy

We collect as little as possible. This page explains what that is.

Information we collect

• Server logs. Our hosting provider, Netlify, automatically processes basic technical information when you visit, such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you request. This is used to deliver the site and keep it secure.
• Contact form. If you send us a message, we receive the name, email address and message you enter. We use it only to reply to you.
• Printable map. When you make a map, your ZIP code is looked up in a file on our own site, and "Use my location" asks your browser for your position. Neither is sent to us. The map images come from the U.S. Geological Survey's public map service, which, like any website, sees which map tiles your browser requests.
• Checklist progress. The emergency kit checklist saves which items you have ticked in your own browser's storage. It never leaves your device, and you can clear it with the "Clear all" button or your browser settings.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used: how many people visit, which pages they read, roughly where they are, what device they use and how they found us. Google Analytics sets cookies to tell visits apart. We use this only to improve the site, and we don't use it to identify you.

• In the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, analytics cookies are off until you choose "Allow analytics" in the banner.
• Everywhere else, analytics is on by default. You can turn it off at any time with the "Cookie settings" link at the bottom of every page.
• You can also block Google Analytics on all sites with Google's opt-out browser add-on.

Google processes this data under its own privacy policy. Your cookie choice is remembered in your browser.

Advertising and affiliate links

We don't show ads at the moment. If we add advertising, such as Google AdSense, we will update this page first, and visitors in regions that require consent will be asked before any advertising cookies are set.

Affiliate links may take you to retailers' websites, which have their own privacy policies.

Sharing

We don't sell your personal information. We share it only with the service providers that run this site, such as our hosting provider and Google Analytics, or when the law requires it.

Your choices

You can ask us to delete any message you have sent us by contacting us.

Children

This site is meant for adults planning for their households. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13.

Changes

If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page.
